William and Carolyn met with Representative Tom Cole,
Senator James Lankford's Education Legislative Aide,
and a staffer for Senator James Inhofe.

They lobbied for maintaining federal funding for those
educational programs that help support state colleges
and universities and sustain the quality educational
opportunities our students deserve.

At the meeting of AAUP's Assembly of State Conferences,
Carolyn gave an excellent report, thanking AAUP for generous
funding of our 2017 event "
The University: Money, Power, and
the Common Good," acknowledging Southeastern's support
for ou
r events the last four years, and noting the possibilities
of building on our "regional approach" to the event (inviting
and including AAUP members in Louisiana and Texas).
June 16--Ibram X. Kendi gave an excellent talk at the annual
AAUP meeting in D.C. His fielding of questions was
outstanding! A remarkable young talent!

June 17--a moving and inspiring talk by Professor Keyishian!
The AAUP recognized special honoree Professor Harry
Keyishian for his courage, integrity, and unstinting commitment to
academic freedom in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of

the 1967 US Supreme Court case Keyishian v. Board of Regents.
​In this landmark case, the Court ruled against New York's loyalty
oath for public employees and established academic freedom as a
"special concern" of the First Amendment.
